As the sun sets and the bush falls quiet, the African night sky comes alive. With almost no light pollution, the Milky Way stretches overhead, constellations shine bright, and shooting stars seem to appear every few minutes. Out here, stargazing isn’t just a night-time activity… it’s an experience.
You might:
Whether you’re into astronomy or just enjoy looking up, there’s something so calming – even humbling – about seeing the universe like this.

Linyanti Expeditions Star Suite Interior.
At African Bush Camps, we don’t just show you the stars, we share the stories behind them. Many of our guides grew up hearing traditional legends about the night sky. These aren’t just tales; they’re ways of understanding the world, passed down through generations.
You’ll learn how stars were once used to:
It’s a powerful reminder that stargazing has always been part of human culture and that the sky means something different to everyone.

Outdoor deck at Bumi Hills Safari Lodge
Many of our Experiences include telescopes, so you can take a closer look at the cosmos. Depending on the night, you might see:
And you’ll be doing it all with the sounds of the African night in the background: a lion’s roar in the distance, the call of an owl overhead, the rustle of leaves as wildlife passes by.

Star bed at Atzaro Okavango Camp
While all of our Experiences offer beautiful night skies, these three are especially good for stargazing:
1. Atzaró Okavango Camp — Botswana
Tucked deep into a remote corner of the Okavango Delta, Atzaró Okavango offers big skies, wide-open views, and absolute stillness. Whether you’re on your private deck or by the firepit, the stars feel close enough to touch.
2. Linyanti Expeditions — Botswana
This Experience is for the adventurous. You can sleep out in a star bed with nothing but a mosquito net between you and the sky. It’s immersive and unforgettable.
3. Somalisa Camp — Zimbabwe
In the heart of Hwange, Somalisa Camp is surrounded by ancient acacias and open skies. The guides here are natural storytellers, so you can expect a night of local myths, laughter, and star-filled skies by the fire.
we stayed at African Bush Camp Linyanti Ebony for 2 nights with our 3 children (ages 8, 11, 12). The Lodge was beautiful und right by the water! In the evening we sat by the fire and everyone tells the stories from what they saw at the game drives. It is authentic, wild and beautiful. At night you can hear the hyaenas and the hippos and see the most wonderful stars.
Wow! Just got home from our stay with African Bush Camps and Linyanti was by far our favorite stop! The area is absolutely gorgeous, with plentiful animals and wildlife…The camp itself is beautiful, rustic yet has every comfort you need. We loved sleeping under the stars on our last night.
Somalisa expedition tented camp was our final African Bush camp that we stayed at during our trip through Botswana and Zimbabwe and what a way to end! Once again we were back in a tented camp and it felt great to be closer to nature once more. The camp has a very rustic feel and fits very well in its natural rural surroundings. The days were filled with fun and adventure and the night sky seemed to never end – filled with masses of stars!

This was truly a 5+ star bucket list experience. We were treated with the utmost respect, generosity and kindness by every staff member. We appreciated the understated luxury, attention to detail, magnificent lodge decor, the on-the-Zambezi River setting, the phenomenal food, guides, trip to the epic Vic Falls and optional activities...
Julia K, March 2024Managing 23 travelers from California, Maine, Massachusetts, and Montana was difficult. Finding a camp in the Okavango was also difficult. Fortunately, I made contact with Vanessa Stanley, and she was able to assist in finding two camps that were proximal to each other, thus allowing a group of 23 to have meals and free time together and still be at a bush camp. Thank you for a wonderful experience.
