“Africa is my canvas and sunlight, my brush strokes.”

Adam Rabinowitz

This exciting collaboration offers guests valuable photography insight at no extra cost. Photographer Adam Rabinowitz will be in residence at Bumi Hills Safari Lodge over three weeks in the secret season, an ideal time for photography. Dramatic thunderstorms, bright landscape and colourful migratory birds will all serve as the focal points to capture Africa’s magic. Adam will be giving informative presentations around the fire, as well as taking guests on themed game drives. Have you ever dreamed of going on a game drive with a world-class photographer and landing the perfect shot? This is your chance,  whether you are an avid or amateur photographer.

Bumi Hills Safari Lodge

Set on a range of remote hills in one of Zimbabwe’s finest wilderness locations, Bumi Hills Safari Lodge is utterly captivating. With the Zambezi escarpment as its backdrop, this haven of serenity overlooks the eternal shimmering waters of Lake Kariba below. Not only is Kariba’s shoreline wildlife-rich, but the lodge’s proximity to Matusadona allows for the wildlife to freely move between the national park and Bumi Hill’s private concession, creating endless game-viewing opportunities, led by our passionate team of guides and Adam.

About the Residency

Adam will share some of his favourite shots and what went into taking them in the evenings during fireside presentations, and you will get a chance to put some of these ideas into practice on game drives with guidance from Adam. For keen photography enthusiasts there is an option to volunteer to be a photographic assistant on Adam’s more ambitious photoshoots which may include:

About Adam Rabinowitz

While many wildlife photographers are in search of rare wildlife sightings, Adam’s focus is on creating iconic images that capture the spirit of Africa. He hopes that his work occupies a space in the hearts and minds of visitors long after they have returned home. It is only through this deep connection with Africa that people begin to understand the importance of protecting our wild spaces and working towards conserving it for future generations.

Adam’s work transports the viewer back to Africa in an instant. With his background in fine art, the African landscape becomes his canvas and the wildlife, photographic elements he “paints in” by waiting for the exact right moment.

Whether it involves driving for days along the 120km long Etosha National Park salt pans in the heat of summer in search of wildlife to capture against the backdrop of a thunderstorm as heat waves rise from the pan (see Palette Knife Zebras)

Or following a mating pair of lions for three days in Chobe National Park to capture an iconic image of the male as he longingly stares back at his partner (see West Wind).

This type of photography has more to do with executing a creative vision than with luck. It is about visualising a concept and then aligning elements in the field through technical skill. On this residency, you will get to experience this creative process first hand.
