Bumi Hills Safari Lodge

Zimbabwe

✈️: Harare International Airport to Bumi Hills, Lake Kariba

Bumi Hills Safari Lodge overlooks the vast and mesmerising Lake Kariba. The lodge offers both lake and land activities and holds a unique history. Explore the unique area on game drives, walking safaris, boat trips or just enjoying the expansive vistas overlooking the lake.

You’ll first visit the Mola Rural Health Centre, which we’ve worked with through sourcing health equipment. The group will then pay a visit to the Mangwara Primary School and Mayovhe Secondary School which our Foundation helped in rebuilding and furnishing. An insightful presentation from the Bumi Hills Anti-Poaching Unit will add insight to the area and its challenges in conservation. The African Bush Camps Foundation is building meaningful relationships with the communities so we understand where we can help within the communities. Not only from our perspective but understanding the needs and hopes of the community and what they need to flourish.

Somalisa Camp

Zimbabwe

✈️: Bumi Hills, Lake Kariba to Hwange National Park

Somalisa Camp is a luxury tented camp with a famous elephant pool at the foot of its deck. If you like elephants, this is the place for you, with over 60% of the wildlife in the park being elephants! You can also see zebra, buffalo, lion, cheetah, wild dog, sable and roan amongst other wildlife.

Being the first camp that we opened, we have the longest-standing relationships on the outskirts of Hwange National Park. This means a full-day visit to Foundation projects is included in this leg of the trip. On the outskirts of Hwange National Park, you’ll experience the 3 pillars which African Bush Camps Foundation stands for; Community Empowerment, Conservation and Education. Under the Education pillar, you’ll be visiting Umtshibi Camp’s school, Main Camp Primary School and Mambanje Primary school. This will give insight into the challenges the communities face and how the Foundation is bettering lives through educating the children on sustainable tourism and conservation. Under the Conservation umbrella, you’ll be visiting the Cattle Boma Project, an ingenious programme that aims to limit human/wildlife conflict, while having knock-on benefits including fertile lands for farming. For Community Empowerment, you visit the Vukani Bead Project and Thandanani Sewing Project.

Thorntree River Lodge

Zambia

✈️: Hwange National Park to Victoria Falls International Airport

🚐: Victoria Falls International Airport to Thorntree River Lodge

Anchored on the banks of the Zambezi River in the Mosi-ao-Tunya National Park, Thorntree River Lodge sends you into a tranquil state the moment you walk through its doors.

With the lodge having been rebuilt and opened in May 2017, our relationships with the Maunga Village are at the beginning stages, but are already thriving and seeing great outcomes. After needs assessment conversations with the community, we helped in rebuilding and refurbishing of the local Maunga Health Centre, which will be the first stop on the project visit. Close to the health centre is the school where a passionate staff member will talk about the needs, methods and goals of the school. Lastly, you’ll pay a visit to a visit to the blacksmith before heading back to the lodge.
