Safaris offer a unique setting for families to reconnect away from daily routines, enjoying wildlife interactions and the beauty of nature together. It’s a chance to share experiences across generations, away from digital distractions, fostering deeper connections and creating lasting memories in the heart of the African wild.
From Big Five sightings and immersive nature walks, to enriching cultural excursions and sunset boat cruises, a family safari with African Bush Camps provides an unforgettable experience for every traveler. At African Bush Camps, we believe that an exceptional safari requires an exceptional guide; this is no different for families traveling with children.
Children of all ages are welcome at any of our Icon Experiences, as well as our family-focused Signature Experiences: Somalisa Acacia, Nyamatusi Mahogany, Linyanti Ebony, and Khwai Leadwood. Travelers over the age of 12 may venture to all of our Signature Experiences.
“Ngwana,” the Setswana word for “explorer,” is the name of our young adventurer program at Somalisa Acacia, Nyamatusi Mahogany, and Linyanti Ebony. The Ngwana Club offers a variety of safari adventures for children of all ages:
Nature Walks
Accompanied by a guide and a parent, children embark on nature walks around the Experience, discovering fun and unique learning opportunities such as traditional plant uses, identifying various bird species, and hunting for the ‘Little 5’. Afterwards, children receive a ‘Junior Guide’ certificate, encouraging continuous learning about future conservation and wildlife preservation.

Ngwana Club Cooking Classes
At Somalisa Acacia and Nyamatusi Mahogany, young travelers can make their own pizzas, meals, smoothies, and drinks under the guidance of our chefs.

Traditional Storytelling
Guides share our heartlands’ history and folklore through performance and interactive drumming sessions that impart traditional legends and stories. In this way, children can learn more about different cultures.

Arts and Crafts/Beading
An arts and crafts corner is where our young guests can get creative, inspired by their new surroundings. They can make bracelets and necklaces as mementos of their time in the bush, as well as enjoying coloring and picture painting.

Within our family-focused Experiences, we provide dedicated children’s menus designed to delight young palates with tasty and wholesome choices. We’re also flexible with dietary needs, ensuring that everyone enjoys their meals to the fullest.
Please be informed that we do not include babysitting services as part of our offering. We prioritize creating memorable safari experiences while ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all guests, especially children, under our care.
Journey on an unforgettable family experience with us as we continue to share and conserve Africa, together.
“Magical stay at Somalisa – fantastic guide
We had a fantastic stay at Somalisa Camp, definitely one of our best ever safaris! Lovely setting in front of a waterhole (elephant herds and other animals frequently coming to drink – even drinking from the old swimming pool of the camp!), great location in Hwange National Park, great wildlife watching (including lions and leopards), attentive service and good food … but above all our guide (Godwin) was fantastic (best ever guide we have had) – managing to get the kids (and adults!) really into the mood of tracking animals and enjoying every single bit of our safari drives!”
“Feeling at home in Zimbabwe
We just came back from a 3 days stay at Nyamatusi ABC in Mana Pools. Travelling with 3 kids, we had an amazing time.
Of course, the beauty of the Mana Pools Natural Reserve is breathtaking.
Of course, Nyamatusi camp is luxurious and comfortable, situated along the Zambeze River, with breathtaking views, private pools and decks in front of each tent, animals that pass through the camp at all hours and let themselves be admired peacefully,….
But what made our stay so special was the welcome we received from the entire camp team! Sheppard and his team pampered us. Zulu cooked us delicious dinners, taking care to please both parents and children. Finally, our guide Cliffy shared his immense knowledge of the park, his good humour and his patience with us. The football party he organised for the children in the savannah at sunset will live long in their memories! Thanks for everything!”
“Khwai Leadwood is an amazing, 5 star spot!
Our extended family of 7 stayed at Khwai Leadwood in mid-June of 2023. We ranged in age from 4 to 76. The lodge and tents were comfortable and clean and right along the river. The views were beautiful and the sounds of the animals at night was like nothing we’ve ever heard before! The food was great and the service from Mimi, KG, and staff was 5 star. Sinkah was an amazing and knowledgeable guide. He was very patient with our four year old and also great with our 10 and 12 year olds. Khwai was definitely worth the work to get there. Two highlights were the helicopter ride of the area and a stop at the local school. I would highly recommend Khwai for a unique and exciting experience!”

Winner 2023
This was truly a 5+ star bucket list experience. We were treated with the utmost respect, generosity and kindness by every staff member. We appreciated the understated luxury, attention to detail, magnificent lodge decor, the on-the-Zambezi River setting, the phenomenal food, guides, trip to the epic Vic Falls and optional activities...
Julia K, March 2024Managing 23 travelers from California, Maine, Massachusetts, and Montana was difficult. Finding a camp in the Okavango was also difficult. Fortunately, I made contact with Vanessa Stanley, and she was able to assist in finding two camps that were proximal to each other, thus allowing a group of 23 to have meals and free time together and still be at a bush camp. Thank you for a wonderful experience.
