Receiving news that the pans around Kanga Camp in Mana Pools National Park are dry means that there has been a ton of action around camp- this being the only water source for miles! Guests had the rare opportunity to watch two wild dogs chasing and bringing down a young kudu.

Wild dogs, Lycaon Pictus, or the painted dog, are carnivorous predators living mostly in the savanna. This rapidly vanishing species is considered Endangered by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as there are around 6,600 left in the world, according to the African Wildlife Foundation and the World Wildlife Fund. Intelligent and highly social, wild dogs are found in packs of 6-15, however some packs can reach numbers up to 40, and like snowflakes, no two dogs are marked the same.

Efficient hunters, wild dogs rely on their impressive stamina to tire their prey and the combined strength of the pack to bring them down. In this video, filmed by Garth, Manager at Kanga Camp, one can see the persistence and dedication of the wild dogs and the resilience of the young kudu, working desperately to get away from its attackers.
