Thorntree River Lodge FAQs

We are delighted to announce the launch of Thorntree River Lodge, the fabulous new addition to the African Bush Camps portfolio. Thorntree River Lodge opens in May 2017 on the shores of the Zambezi River within the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park. In the local dialect, Mosi-Oa-Tunya means ‘The Smoke That Thunders’ in reference to the mighty Victoria Falls which borders the park. The park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, covers 66 km2 (25 sq mi) and lies along some of the most pristine and unexplored river frontage along the Zambezi.

Below you will find some more information on Victoria Falls, activities, lodge, rates and introductory offer as well as logistics to and from Thorntree River Lodge:

VICTORIA FALLS AND MOSI-OA-TUNYA NATIONAL PARK

In the local dialect, Mosi-Oa-Tunya means ‘The Smoke That Thunders’ in reference to the mighty Victoria Falls which borders the park. Situated along the upper Zambezi River in Zambia, Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park extends for 12km up the Zambezi River above Victoria Falls. The park boasts a beautiful variety of plants and trees including tall riverine forests with palm trees, miombo woodland and grassland. The park is home to a variety of birds and animals, including 35 species of raptors (such as Taita falcon, black eagle, peregrine falcon and augur buzzard), Grant’s zebra, warthog, sable, eland, impala and white rhino. Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park forms the South-Western boundary of the city of Livingstone and lies adjacent to the immense and awe-inspiring Victoria Falls, which is the world’s largest curtain of falling water.

ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS

Thorntree River Lodge is being built with an environmentally-conscious design. Drawing inspiration from local customs and culture, it is a modern contemporary design with tented roof structures to maintain the feel of authentic Africa. The lodge will boast 8 double suites and 2 family suites, comprising of 4 beds each. Each suite, overlooking its own stretch of pristine river frontage, will have its own indoor and outdoor bathrooms, as well as a luxurious private plunge pool. The main lodge consists of a lounge with an open dining area, where the fine dining experience of African cuisine will come to life. The dining room flows into a private, temperature controlled wine cellar stocked with the finest wines. There is a gym, spa and a small library with WIFI for our guests’ convenience. The communal deck is set on the edge of the stunning riverside, and is home to a sunken boma area and an infinity pool. Wooden decking floats on the edge of the river, and moves with the water level to create the illusion of sailing a boat, and help to achieve a seamless feel between river and land.
